Androstenol are produced by both men and women when they sweat, but men secrete about 50% more of these human pheromones than women do. This difference is significant as higher levels of androstenol have a direct association with the male sex.

Just like androstenone this 'male' scent is created by higher levels of sexually dimorphic blood androgen in men, coupled with a higher number of different micro-bacteria resident under the armpits of men. The exact chemical signature of the androstenol human pheromones emitted from each of us is as unique as we are mainly in response to these factors.

In today's hygienic culture human pheromones form as androstenol is rarely emitted naturally from either men or women in any significant quantity. This is because regular bathing and the use of underarm deodorants neutralize these human pheromones before they have a chance to disperse into the air.
