The 'Male' scent of Virility

Androstenol is an alcohol that is secreted from glands under the armpit. It is a metabolite thought to emerge as a by-product of the metabolism of the androgen steroid hormone, testosterone. It is synonymous with male sex-drive and so we see the first signs of why androstenol chemicals are thought to be important human pheromones. However, unlike androstenone, androstenol is only produced naturally in significant quantities during puberty through until our mid-twenties. Thereafter, levels of natural androstenol decrease drastically.

Excreted androstenol acts as human pheromones when it reaches the surface of the skin. It combines with micro-bacteria to produce a chemical "signature" which is generally odorless. This scent is then dispersed through the air as human pheromones to be picked up by the vemeronasal organ of people close by.
